Sources and tips for players without a japanese background

For people without a japanese background learning shogi can be pretty hard. Of course shogi is deeply beddened in the japanese culture.

I know how the pieces move and drop, but I am missing a lot of concepts.
Can somebody tell or refer to some place where concepts are explained without (or with only a few) characters and words in japanese?
