I suck at shogi T-T

You're actually right to question it, especially if you are coming from a Chess background. In Western Chess, White moves first. In Shogi, Black moves first.

Also, Japanese players seldom use "Black" and "White" -- instead, they use Sente and Gote. Sente literally means the one who plays first, and Gote means the one who plays later.

By the way, regarding the game record: what would be considered a "stalemate" in Chess is actually a loss for the immobilized player in Shogi. In Shogi, if you have no legal moves left, you lose the game.
