failing to checkmate...

I've just recently won successfully by checkmating the opponent. However, it has taken way too long to come to that point...
What can I improve in order to make my skills better? Tsume problems? General puzzles?

Tsume and puzzles are good. there are also some studies here that focus on checkmate patterns, e.g.:

You can also learn a lot from studying the post-game analysis: both you and your opponent missed various opportunities to checkmate. Spending some time looking at that will also help you defend.
