Wondering if anyone has tried any Shogi cafes or dojos in Tokyo that they had a good experience with. I'm a beginner so any place where beginners are welcome is good. I also speak conversational Japanese, but if it's a really tryhard (for lack of a better word) place, I feel like it might be a bit difficult. Thanks a lot!
If you are in Tokyo, the Shogi Kaikan in Sendagaya is good.
It's the simplest.
The staff is also kind.
Hi! Full disclosure: I live in Osaka, so I don't know the Tokyo scene well enough to confidently name specific spots, and I'd rather not send you somewhere I can't vouch for. That said, I can walk you through how I think about the "dojo vs. cafe" question, which might help you decide.
For Dojos:
If your main goal is to focus on playing Shogi, start at the dojo in the Shogi Kaikan building in Sendagaya. You can sit down, play a few games, and get your playing strength assessed. It's the single most straightforward on-ramp for a beginner.
I'd gently steer you away from dropping into a small neighborhood dojo right off the bat. It's not that they're bad, but many of them quietly assume everyone already knows the local customs. When the regulars are a close-knit group, the organizers rarely get a chance to walk a newcomer through the unwritten house rules, and it can be a little uncomfortable.
Once you've played a few sessions in Sendagaya, though, everything gets much easier. You'll know the etiquette, and the Sendagaya rating is a widely recognized benchmark, so a local dojo can easily peg your strength to their own scale.
For Cafes:
On the other hand, if you just want a low-pressure, casual setting—a game or two over coffee, a bit of chat, and no one expecting you to grind toward dan ranks—a Shogi cafe is probably your best bet.
As for which specific cafes in Tokyo are the most beginner-friendly, I'd happily defer to a local who can tell you with confidence. Hope this helps you narrow down your search!
