Computer Always Plays Static Rook

Playing against the computer is usually a pretty good way to train when you don't have a real person to play against. However, the computers on Lishogi are a bit dry. Specifically, they always seem to play the same few openings, all of which being Static Rook openings. This is because Static Rook is the “top engine move” (and the second, and third, and fourth), even though that doesn't matter that much in the opening. However, this means the computer sucks to train against, because you'll always get the same opening thrown at you. It'd be nice if the computer were to spice up its openings.

A simple way you could implement this is to give the computer a weighted opening book, weighted either on how common the moves are in master play or how good the moves are according to the engine. (The computer should be able to stray from the book if it wants to.) Another way is to make the computer, at the start of the game, decide “I want to play Static Rook” or “I want to play 3ʳ̲ᵈ̲ File Rook” or “I want to play 4ᵗ̲ʰ̲ File Rook” or “I want to play Opposing Rook” etc., then have it try to do that. Another way is to increase the computer's temperature when in the early opening phase, then set it back to normal once it's played a few moves.

An extreme example of this: A while ago, I was playing the level 3 computer. I had memorized a certain sequence of moves it would play, without fail, if I were to play the same moves every time. I don't know if this has been fixed in the most recent update.

We can't afford to make these things too smart. Haven't you watched 'Terminator'??!

Okay, but then I have to set the opening manually, and there's no way to randomize without setting up another position myself. Also, now I know what the computer will play because I was the one who played it.

I have a list of sfens to start games: roll some rng then cp it

Okay, but I would still be the one copying it, and thus would still know what the computer will play. Also, a preset position also sets in place *my* pieces. Perhaps I wouldn't move my pieces like that.

You can't post in the forums yet. Play some games!
