Why are check and checkmate not recognized?
The point of dobutsu shogi is to capture the lion, so checkmate isn't enough - although checkmate necessarily leads to lion capture on the next move. Check is not displayed because I think it's better like that with variants where the point is to capture the king and staying in check is legal.
But the point isn't to *capture* the lion, it's to *catch* the lion, which could also mean check-/stalemate. The current system and a system with check and mate are wholly equivalent, since you cannot win by the try rule while in check. Not having check and mate just means adding an extra turn to the move list and an added annoyance when not in professional mode (or whatever the mode is called where illegal moves are allowed but lead to an instant loss).
Anyway, I'm sure it seems like I'm always critical about everything, since I don't really speak up about things when I like them. Thank you for making this site, and thank you for adding Animal Shogi to it. I always hate playing on PyChess, since the server takes forever to load the page, so it's nice to have a quick and snappy server like Lichess for one of my favourite board games.
