This is a hexagonal grid Shogi variant I designed. The link above has a downloadable version of the game--and also a rules PDF if you want to read the rules (only in English for now).
I would love feedback!
Isn't there already a hex variant?

Anyway, I don't really think hexagonal variants are viable, seeing as the “bishop” is more like a knightrider. Hexagons don't have diagonal neighbours, after all. It's the same problem as in [hexagonal chess](en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hexagonal_chess#Gli%C5%84ski's_hexagonal_chess).
You may say this isn't a problem, but it raises the skill floor (fewer players), and wreks the balance (since bishops can now jump over pawns).
There are indeed several other hexagonal Shogi variants! I certainly am not claiming that I made the *only* hexagonal Shogi variant. ^_^
I happen to agree with you on the difficulty of playing most hexagonal chess games. That's actually one of the big reasons why the idea of designing a hexagonal Shogi variant was an attractive challenge to me.
If you look at the rules for Hekusa Shogi, you'll see that I took a very different approach than the traditional Glinski-style hexagonal movement, for just the reasons you describe.
You can't post in the forums yet. Play some games!
