Finished Chu Shogi Correspondence Games

For next year I would consider that people cannot always call in the vacation time ahead of schedule when there is an emergency.

For next correspondence tournament I would insist on time control with periods of byoyomi and I will be relying on adjournments for correspondence games being implemented on Lishogi.

The only reason why in this exact tournament byoyomi periods are not introduced is because of conflicting with vacations under current implementation on Lishogi - there's no convenient way to set up same starting time as on stopped clocks after the adjournment.

But even with periods of byoyomi (which make the time control way much softer) you're still obligated to properly announce the vacation (saying simply, press button "adjourn game", e.g. "pause game")

Without doing so there is no way to figure out whether you basically forgot about your time, or you truly really remembered about the game, but just need to stop game for a while (that's called a vacation).

Vacation time is not designed to compensate you overspending the time of the game you neglect.

Alex, since the time control in this round was misunderstood, I would appreciate if we could resume to the two suspended games. It damages the quality of the tournament to throw games out over misunderstood technicality.

?? Vacation time should be designed to allow games to be completed in the long form context that is Chu Shogi. Forcing only a 48 hour time out imposes a terrible life condition upon the players. There should be some remedy here.

To be fair, a 2-day window is plenty of time for a chu shogi correspondence game. Anything higher and the games will take forever. Usually 24 hours is reasonable to make most moves, and the extra 24 hours gives you time in case you can’t.

No, the rules had said that there was ten days of vacation time. For a 300 move game requiring someone to log on every two days or lose the whole investment is absolutely absurd. People with real intelligence have actual responsibilities that may sometimes take precedence over a fun board game for at least one day.

Couch tomato, the issue is not whether the window is 24 hours or 48 hours, or whether there are additional periods of byoyomi or not as Alex trick suggested. People should not be forced to log onto a long game within a short time window and have to lose the entire game. Actually having ten days of vacation time would be helpful. Why not reward players who make moves quickly by giving them some additional time per move made? This could cause correspondence games to complete sooner. For instance once could try giving 24 hours of time added per move, or less or more.

The Tournament Rules state that you can only use your vacation time by sealing your move.
That's the least requirement.

The rest of formal procedures like offering a draw and announcing in the chat about the adjournment are not so important (but strongly recommended to be followed), but simply reporting about your vacation to the referee is an essential and mandatory thing, without that your claim for the vacation is not valid.

The vacation doesn't stand to "extend" your thinking time and it doesn't save you from your timeout.
The vacation only stands up when you plan it before your timeout

10 days had to be announced -- it's something preplanned. If something comes up in life then unless you immediately request vacation, it's considered a timeout.

I do agree it would be nice if the time controls allowed for 1 period of extra time in case of emergency, like a single-use byoyomi.
