Discounting the obvious "it's different for everyone" answer, what are some of the general characteristics of the various opening lines?
For instance, if I already know from Go that I like to go on the attack wherever possible, should I be focusing on swing rook (and if so, what are the ideas behind each file)? Static rook? Central rook? Gokigen central rook?
Any kind of general advice for thinking about how to approach various midgame combinations would also be welcome. Like say, what if we both go yagura, what if I go mino 4th file against my opponent's yagura. Or anywhere I can look to find such resources in English would be helpful too! (and yes I've already watched all of Hidetchi's youtube)
What kind of opening is recommended to learn with?
For those that comes from chess.... Onigoroshi
How about watching all of 'Shogi Ramen TV'. A Japanese guy that plays live Shogi games on the Shogi Wars app. He names the games after the castles and opening strategies of both players! He speaks good enough English to give thoughts during these 10 minute blitz games. I find them very useful, especially with regard to what castle or plan to adopt against an opponent's castle and plan! * I think overall, it would just useful to play through as many professional Shogi games as you can to find commonality of play they adopt against static or ranging rook...just build that database of game knowledge, that can help ideas during your own games...Regards
