You underestimate the power of culture -- chess is strongly lodged in most of the world. You can't simply replace or overtake it. It also has the advantage of being more accessible and easier to learn than shogi (piece moves are very very straightforward. Rules are not as complex).
I believe the following
Cultures change over time, and the pace of this change is in our era of global networking and the exchange of information faster than ever. The whole world plays Pokemon, Mario, Final Fantasy, Street Fighter etc. even though these are 100% Japanese franchises. But this fact remains only in the background of our minds when we engage with it, you could say they've ascended to the status of 'human games' rather than only 'Japanese games'. I predict the same destiny also for Shogi, at the time when everyone will learn about it and how it is superior to other strategic board games in every regard (again, that's my personal, not-so-humble opinion). The future of the game lies outside of Japan. It's currently still hard to believe in all this, but with every year which passes the international Shogi scene is growing larger and stronger. Just compare the present with how things were 20, 30 or even 50 years ago, when hardly anybody outside Japan knew about Shogi. See how far we've got since then, and suddenly a future where the whole world plays and knows about Shogi seems much more plausible. And with every new player, there's also a new ambassador of the game - that's called exponential growth.
I see only one way to make Shogi popular all over the world. The Japanese Shogi federation should officially change kanji pieces to Dobutsu shogi in the Greenwood ones :) Of course this will never happen because Shogi, as it is, a big part of their culture.
But it would be cool :)
Hah, those look adorable. The regular pieces look a little bit too similar to tombstones when you stare at them for too long, so cute animals might be way to go. 👍
You may ignore 2 fatal flaw about shogi, chess and go
They are in the pure version 2 player games and have chance part
@loliconchess Could you please repeat that in German? I'm sorry, but I don't understand your English in your last post, and I don't want to misconstrue you.
Du ignorierst 2 Schwächen von Go, Schach und Shogi.
Kein Zufallsfaktor und in Reinform nur 2 Spieler
Achso. Danke, es war gut dass ich nachfragte.
I don't view the lack of chance and the restriction to 2 players as weaknesses. This way, the game provides an equal playing field for everbody. Every victory or defeat is your sole responsibility and that's something you can't say in a team sport. But if you hold a different opinion and dislike these factors, I respect that.
what year do you think shogi will take over?
@kysticknight When a baby of our present time will be old enough to have their own grandchildren. Everything else would be too optimistic.
