Table Shogi Boards!

As promised in another post, I thought I'd create some new equipment threads. First up, table boards. I have a few which I will add later, but my personal favorite is a 1 sun (3 cm) kaya board from Aoyama Gobanten in Shinjuku. Highly recommended vendor, with impeccable packaging, prompt helpful communication, and shockingly fast fedex shipping to the US.

The pieces are engraved maple and were also from Aoyama Gobanten back in 2020, though I no longer see them listed on the site. The pieces stands are kaya and appear to still be available.

I hope my photos come through and someone enjoys them. I'd love to see what other table boards people are using.

That looks very good! Incidentally, I looked at the map on their website and the street looked very familiar... When I visited Japan back in 2015, I was staying only 2km away! I wish I had known that store existed, I would have picked up a nice set haha. Instead, I picked up a cheap plastic set from a big-box store and it came with FOUR silver generals and only two lances......

When I was there in 2018 I didn't know, either! I was pretty surprised and disappointed that throughout Tokyo and Kyoto I couldn't find any nice shogi stores or cafes and in fact didn't even see a single game being played anywhere. Like you, I also ended up buying a very cheap plastic set from a big box store (Yodabashi in Akihabara) along with a Nintendo Switch shogi title. At least I ended up getting a March Comes in Like a Lion gold general cat from a gacha machine, though! :D

Next time I'm there I'm definitely visiting Aoyama Gobanten if they're still in business. 🤞

@ohithere I love seeing different shogi equipment since it's pretty tough to find good stuff (or expensive). I always wondered what Aoyama's kaya boards looked like, yours looks great. Thin enough to take with you yet still beautiful.

I got this one made of Chinese kaya at miwagobanten, I love it though I didn't realize just how big and thick it would be. Not complaining, it's just not going anywhere easily. The pieces from the same store are boxwood and are lovely.

For my portable set this folding agathis board had such rough paint on it I sanded and waxed it which helped a bit. Home made komadai and stamped maple pieces.

I may as well post another picture of my board, same pic as in the thread I posted earlier. This board I made myself from hardware store craft wood. The detachable legs and the komadai are made from prefabricated table/stairs pieces from the same store. I cut the lines with a machine, sanded, stained everything the same color, painted in the lines, and did a light oil topcoat. The pieces are from the online store Nekomado.

@LizardWizard really great idea. I think of it as the western version of a board with legs. Very much a piece of furniture but you can use chairs instead of sitting on the floor. Do you get to use it a lot?

I don't have a shogi board.

Can I post a Go board the university temporarily entrusted to me, lmao? I also have a Go magnetic board of my own, too.

No Shogi board, unfortunately.

Love all those photos!

@FrostedNuke I used to have a chinese kaya floor gobanten that was beautiful but did not have the nice grain of yours. Wow. O_O Your pieces look interesting, too. No way I believe those are stamped maple. They look incredible.

Regarding size, yeah, I bought the 1 sun board because I wanted something potentially portable (even though I have a vinyl roll up which goes in my chess bag and which I really like too) to go along with my floor shinkaya shogi board (future thread). Tomorrow I've got a shogi club meetup and I was thinking I might bring the board but maybe not... :)

@ohithere I say bring it unless you are worried about damage. It's nice to not have to compromise on good feel when at the club.

The pieces in the pile are stamped, not ones in the game position if that was the confusion.

Also well spotted but that is my go board on the floor. I do have a shogi floor board as well but this thread is for table boards right? ;)
